Female-owned businesses in the construction industry are essential, especially in a country like South Africa. Supporting female-owned businesses is vital in this all-important industry. In 2014, the National Home Builders Registration Council (NHBRC) invested in emerging female entrepreneurs in the construction industry. This four-month academic programme offered networking and mentorship support. Once the course was completed, the businesses would get exposure to business leads.
Some of the topics that were covered in the Programme included the following: Marketing, Negotiations skills, as well as Business Models and Strategy Development.
What kind of goals did the chosen delegates have in their businesses? Some of the goals that the delegates spoke about attaining in their businesses included the following: establishing offices nationally, as well as increasing revenue.
It is important to note that over 300 women have gone through the NHBRC’s Women Empowerment Programme. The Programme was created in order to develop leadership potential and improve women’s business skills. It is quite an impressive achievement that so many women have gone through the Women Empowerment Programme.
In addition, the NHBRC’s Women Empowerment Programme received an award for the Most Innovative Training Programme at the Women in Construction Awards at the Sandton Convention Centre. The Women in Construction Awards took place on 13 May 2015. This is a prestigious award to win.

The NHBRC held a women’s roundtable in Gauteng in 2018, showing how committed it is to transformation in the human settlements and built environment sector. The roundtable was held after the NHBRC’s Transformation Charter was launched. The Charter was created to empower selected groups through procurement, training and development, and employment opportunities.
NHBRC and NCI have now partnered together
The NHBRC has partnered with the National Construction Incubator (NCI). The NHBRC has started a series of skills training workshops for women who are interested in the construction field. These workshops will take place in various venues in the Eastern Cape, Free State, Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal. They will be held on specific dates in August and September 2020.
